Do you know what *kind* of video you are trying to create?

Do you have a proper think about what it is you’re trying to convey before you record video?

Most people don’t and it shows

Let me be clear, I’m not talking about the multitude of people all over the world that create “off the cuff” stream of consciousness type content & upload straight to YouTube without any editing. That kind of video is great if you intend for it to fit into that niche of video making.

You are not those people. You are a woman, with a business. And you want to connect with your audience.

You have an online space, you want to reach more people and you’d like to leverage the use of video, to message your peeps and engage on a different level. And you totally can provided you do a teeny, tiny bit of preparation before hitting the record button.

Here are a few things you can do to make sure your videos are on brand, set a tone and connect with your audience:

CONSISTENCY & SET-UP: There are a few entrepreneurial women online with their own web TV shows or regular video content that choose to always set their videos in the same space/studio/set up. If you want to do this, it’s great for creating familiarity & setting the scene. Your viewer expects it and so is not distracted with the background and can concentrate on what you say.

Don’t fret about having to rent an expensive studio space for this though, just find somewhere that you know will, with some regularity, be free for you to use, will be quiet and does not have too much going on in the background. And if you are inclined to change it up each time you record a video, that’s fine too but remember, make sure it’s safe, it’s quiet and that there aint too much going on in the background to distract your viewer.

SETTING THE TONE: You know your field, your thang, your business and so should have a sense of the tone you’d like to set when creating your videos. Be careful to not get too wrapped up in what is ‘expected’ of people in your field of expertise. Don’t subscribe to what you think you SHOULD do but go with your gut and feel free to express yourself truly and with integrity. This is the best way and it’ll absolutely help your viewer connect with YOU and your message.

But do keep in mind what it is you wish your viewer to take away, the message you hope to convey to them and what they are going to get out of it. For me, my business message is infused with FUN & laughter [it's the Jester part of my business archetype] as well as the practical things you need to know when creating video. Hence why it’s totally on brand and the right tone for me to record silly/funny videos and to not take myself too seriously. My viewer gets this and gets my message that making video does not have to be ALL serious all the time.

Again try not to compare and mimic what others are doing in your field but make sure if you’re gonna record a video of you dancing around to Beyonce, in your knickers, in your bedroom, that it’s on brand for you, that your audience will ‘get’ it and that you don’t risk alienating the very people you are hoping to connect with.

BREVITY IS BEAUTIFUL. I’m sure it was Danielle La Porte that coined that phrase, when talking about your writing. The same holds true for video. No one wants to hear you yap on about your ‘thang’ for 15-20mins, it’s tres boring, no-one has the attention span for it and peeps will press stop and click away. Not good.

So harness the power to say what you want to say in a brief but powerful way. If you think it can’t be done, watch your favourite commercial and you’ll see how certain brands are able to tell you EVERYTHING you need to know in 20-30 seconds. KAPOW!

Video Archive – Inpired Action [from NYC]

This little video was shot in Bryant park, behind the New York City library in Nov 2010, just after I had attended Marie Forleo’s Rich Happy & Hot event.

I was inspired to talk about how taking the first step toward a goal is the best thing you can do and that from there all sorts of great things will happen. Oh and if you could help me wish for my long hair again, that would be fabulous!!

PS at the end of the video I mention the ‘Sassy Minx Club’ well that was it’s first incarnation, it’s now the Sassy Minx Society and you can join by popping your details into the form on the top right of the home page or go here

Bridging the gap between you and your dream

If you have visited this site more than once you’ll know it tends to be all about video, how you can do it better and how I can help you to Shine on Screen.

Now that’s still true but being great in front of the camera is rooted somewhere a little deeper. It’s rooted in your self confidence, self esteem and most importantly how you express yourself and want to be in the world.

Self expression is my key driver. Without it I feel stunted, stuck and silenced. But I also know that expression without a goal [though fine and dandy when you just HAVE to say what you wanna say] can, with repetition, seem like a stone rattling around in an empty can.

All noise and no intent.

And so it’s important to know what your self expression is for. Is it to achieve your goals? Is it to help others? Perhaps helping others IS achieving your goal.

Last year I had a chat with my wonderful friend & constant inspiration, Lee Chalmers about what it means to have a dream or a goal and why it is crucial to your self development.

Have a wee watch and let me know what you think in the comments.

Would you like to be notified when a new video is up on my site? AND become a member of the super cool & oh so snazzy Sassy Minx Society?
